🌿 Birch is known as a pioneer species and symbolizes renewal in Celtic mythology. It is the first tree in the Ogham alphabet and was honored during Samhain, marking the Celtic new year, when birch twigs were used for purification. This practice evolved into local rituals like ‘beating the bounds.’ Birch besoms are still used today in gardens and were once linked to witches’ broomsticks and shamanic rituals. Birch also symbolizes fertility and was central to Beltane (May Day) celebrations, often serving as a maypole and used in ceremonial fires due to its early spring growth.
